Big Y Opens New Market in Simsbury, CT

SPRINGFIELD, MA – (October 20, 2020) On Thursday, November 5, Big Y will be celebrating the official opening of their 71st supermarket at 1313 Hopmeadow Street in Simsbury CT. In the interest of consumer and employee safety, Big Y World Class Market will not be holding an opening event. Instead, they will kick off a month of celebrations, virtual store tours, giveaways, special sales, exciting discounts and a myriad of contests. Construction began in December of 2019 for the 49,707 square foot market.

 

According to Big Y president and CEO, Charles L. D’Amour, “All of us at Big Y are excited to show the Simsbury community our world class shopping experience. I’m very proud of our teams who have been working diligently for months to prepare this market for opening. We know that our customers will appreciate our selection of fresh and local foods, our outstanding employee service and the value and variety that our new store has to offer.”

 

Some highlights of this market include signature offerings in every department from hand tossed pizzas, rotisserie chickens and panini sandwiches to cooked to order fish & chips, steamed Maine lobsters, freshly made sushi, and expertly cut Angus Prime and Choice beef and air-chilled chicken, to specialty cheeses, freshly sliced to order deli meats, hand decorated cakes, made from scratch snowflake rolls, hand crafted floral arrangements and local fruits and vegetables at their peak of freshness. Big Y’s extensive produce department of over 500 different items supports as many local farmers as possible throughout the growing season including Calabrese Farms produce from neighboring Southwick, MA. In addition to natural, organic and gluten free products and a strong family of Big Y brands, this store features over 75 craft beers from favorites such as Thomas Hooker, Back East, Counter Weight, New England, Connecticut Valley and City Steam. Other local finds as part of the over 2000 local products include favorites like Hilltop Apiaries honey from Simsbury, Arethusa Farms cheeses from Bantam, Canton Creamery from Canton, Twin Pines Farm relishes and pickled foods from Thomaston, Bear’s Smokehouse BBQ from South Windsor, All Natural Cleaning Products from Hebron, Ridge Runner Soaps from Harwinton and Candlewood Coffee from Brookfield among the hundreds of local suppliers featured in the market.

 

In addition to exceptional service, customers will appreciate the added convenience and safety of self- checkouts and myExpress Checkout, Big Y’s new scan and go service where customers can scan their own items for an even faster shopping trip.

 

Store Director, Sam Chevalier has over 5 years of experience as a store director in 3 different Big Y locations. He began his career in 2002 as an assistant produce manager and in 2005 was promoted to produce sales manager until he was selected for the store director training program. Chevalier and his team have hired 111 new employees and worked diligently to train them to provide the best shopping experience ever. The store will be open daily from 7AM until 9PM. In addition to Big Y’s rigorous food safety practices, they will also follow all current CDC, state and local safety and sanitation guidelines including mask wearing, social distancing and enhanced cleaning protocols.

 

A company strongly committed to giving back to their local community, Big Y has donated food valued at over

$11 million last year to local non-profit organizations, schools, churches and educational programs. This effort continues this year with an additional $250,000.00 to 5 local food banks during this year of unprecedented need. As part of their opening celebration, Big Y will be donating $1,000 in Big Y gift cards to Food Share’s regional food bank in order to provide further assistance in this community.
